ABOUT MEACO

Founded in 1989, all the national ophthalmological societies of the Arab countries came together to establish the Pan Arab Council of Ophthalmology (PACO), under the leadership of HRH Prince Abdulaziz Bin Ahmed Bin Abdulaziz Al Saud and Dr. Akef El-Maghraby. Their aim was to unite ophthalmologists and ophthalmic societies throughout the Middle East and Africa.

In 1997, the board unanimously decided to merge the Council with the Afro-Arab Society of Ophthalmology and as a result, the Council was renamed as Pan Arab African Council of Ophthalmology (PAACO).

In 2005, the Iranian Ophthalmological Society, which has more than 1,200 members, formally joined the PAACO, which resulted in the renaming of the council to the Middle East African Council of Ophthalmology (MEACO). In 2006, the Turkish Ophthalmology Society also joined the MEACO.

The Council is administered by the MEACO Executive Officers headed by the President, a Board of ophthalmologists elected by their societies. The MEACO staff is based in 3 locations, Riyadh, Jeddah, and Cairo and they are responsible for the Council's day-to-day activities.

The American Academy will conduct its 113th annual meeting in San Francisco, California, October 2009. At the opening ceremony, the Academy recognizes an individual or organization for special distinction. This honor is presented only once annually and is dedicated to unique service for our profession.

It is the privilege and responsibility of the president to select the honoree and I am delighted to recognize the Iraqi Ophthalmology Society at this time.  It has been a pleasure for international ophthalmology to observe the reconstitution and reconstruction of your organization over the last 5 years.  Through chaos and conflict your colleagues have remained faithful to the practice of medicine and the provision of eye care services to your citizens.  You have sought organizational alliances in your region and globally and have reacquainted with the total family of ophthalmology through your relationships with the Middle Eastern African Council, the International Council and especially with the American Academy of Ophthalmology
